Hi there and welcome to Alex's Blog. The weather is slowly getting colder and soon the frost shall be setting in. Not everyone puts the bike away for the colder season so here are the top 10 winter riding essentials to keep you warm and cosy on your motorcycle this Winter.
- Heated handlebar grips
A game changer, no, THE game changer. Once you've tried riding with heated grips you will not go back. Ever. We've had many customers mock their friends for having them...... then they try them..... and well, lets just say that they are bestsellers at J&S for a reason. Very easy to fit and even easier to use, the Oxford Hot Grips are our best selling grips with different versions for touring, sports, cruisers etc. The BEST bit of kit you will buy for riding in Winter. They keep your hands toastie warm and the temperature can be controlled very easily even with gloves on.
2. A good pair of gloves
Your hands are one of the first things to feel the cold so you want to make sure you have a good pair of gloves to protect you from not only the cold, but from rain and snow too. The Richa Cold Protect Gore-Tex Motorcycle Gloves do exactly as their title suggests. Protect you from the cold! They have thermal padding and a Gore-Tex 100% waterproof and breathable membrane along with a longer gauntlet styling and added armour throughout for impact resistance. For more information on the Richa Cold Protect motorcycle gloves you can read a previous product review post on them here.
3. Wear the right jacket
Riding in the Winter requires more than just protective clothing, although this is more important than ever with the extra-slippy roads, but you need warm and waterproof clothing. The Richa Cyclone Gore-Tex Motorcycle Jacket isn't the cheapest of jackets, but it is a fantastic Winter jacket with a 100% waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex membrane and detachable warm thermal quilted padded liner. The durable outer protects you from cold winds while the thermal liner keeps you warm despite the cold weather. The beauty of this jacket is that it is also a fantastic Summer jacket - so a fantastic investment. You can read a more in-depth review of this jacket here.
4. All-weather motorcycle pants
Zipping your jacket to your jeans prevents wind and water ingress. If your kit doesn't zip together then worry not - you can buy zips and stitch them very easily (or get someone else to!) or even better have a matching set! You also want to make sure that the trousers you wear are waterproof but also have hook and loop adjustments at the bottom of the leg to prevent water and wind ingress to keep the cold out. The Richa Cyclone Gore-Tex Pants zip to the above jacket and offer the same high level of protection against the elements and impacts! Again, these are an investment piece, but are extremely versatile for use in all seasons!
5. Invest in a good pair of boots
Like your hands, your feet are always prone to feeling the cold before other body parts. A good waterproof boot means water won't get in to your boots making your feet cold! The IXS Ultra Evo II Gore-Tex motorcycle boots have been reduced from £259.99 to only £159.99 - save £100!
6. Treat your feet
Another way to keep your feet protected from the cold weather is a good pair of socks. The Frank Thomas Hot Socks are heat for your feet - a real treat! Extremely comfortable and made with advanced yarn technology, the Hot Socks keep your feet toasty warm. These are also machine washable!
7. Cover all areas
Another key to Winter riding is making sure that you're fully covered up. This means making sure your cuffs at your wrists and ankles are all tightly closed and making sure that the space between your jacket and your helmet is covered. The EDZ Xwarm Fleece Necktube is the ideal Winter neck tube. As you have already worked out fro the title, this is extra warm thanks to the fleece construction. This is also machine washable with flat seams to make this ultra-comfortable.
8. Its all in the layers
Base layers are ESSENTIAL for Winter riding. Ideally base layers combined with mid layers and some fantastic waterproof outer wear should mean pure comfort! The Oxford Products Warm Dry Base Layers do exactly that! Keep you warm and dry! These are machine washable and don't really need any explanation! Also available in a top and trousers.
9. Keep your visor clear
Riding in colder weather as well as being challenging for keeping you warm and comfortable also brings about problems for your vision! British Winters mean rain, rain and more rain and Nikwax Visor Proof beads water on your visor to keep it clear. This really is remarkable stuff and no biker should be without it. This is small, compact, very easy to apply and quite frankly ESSENTIAL!
10. Protect your visor from fogging
As all bikers know, condensation goes hand in hand with rain and colder weather. Pinlock inserts laugh in the face of this and make fogging up a thing of the past!! The Pinlock lens is made out of a soft and porous moisture absorbing material. The airtight pocket between the Pinlock insert and the visor creates an extra insulation layer, giving anti-fogging properties. Each insert is helmet/model specific and your visor has to be Pinlock compatible (with two pins) but you can ask us in store (in our 30 stores nationwide) or contact us if you're unsure. Pinlock inserts come in different tints to whatever you prefer and are completely road legal. Very easy to change and insert, a Pinlock insert really is an essential for Winter riding.
Until next time, stay safe,
