Alpinestars SMX Plus Motorcycle Boots
SMX Plus boots have been a mainstay in Alpinestars' boot collections with differing updates, but mainly the same boot, for a while now. The SMX Plus has also been a bestselling boot for us; it is always in our top five bestselling boots of the year here at J&S. I also think it's very telling that a LOT of our staff members (and I mean a LOT!) actually own these boots. Out of all the brands we have to offer, and all the different models, a high proportion of our sales teams own these exact boots. That speaks volumes. With that in mind, when writing this blog, I consulted all the SMX Plus wearers for any negatives - as you will see, we were clutching at straws!
Safety
A HUGE plus point of the SMX Plus boots is the plethora of protection throughout the boot. The whole boot is CE certified. Alpinestars exclusive Multi Link Control (MLC) system helps prevent ankle torsion and hyperextension while offering freedom of movement and added impact protection to critical ankle areas. In addition, replaceable, dual-density advanced polymer toe-sliders, moulded ankle protectors, a high-density TPU rear heel-plate slider and a reinforced shock-absorbing heel counter protect and reduce friction in the event of a crash. The main body of the boot is constructed from ultra-lightweight but ultra-durable Microfibre for high abrasion resistance. A ratchet buckle closure on the calf ensures a precise and secure fit. At the same time, the contoured synthetic compound sole features aqua-dynamic channels to promote a more significant water run-off and gives fantastic grip and feedback.
Styling
The Alpinestars SMX Plus boots feature a classic sports racing styling. It is a sleek boot with extremely high levels of protection throughout, yet these protectors are incorporated into the design rather than dominating. The result is elegant, sporty and classically Alpinestars. Even the accordion detailing, which is a practical feature, looks good. Alpinestars' have angled it to look good, plus the vents look great but are also positioned for maximum airflow. This particular boot is the plain black version, which, let's be honest, you can't go wrong with. Hints of white with the Alpinestars branding complete the classic look. Despite looking like a race boot, the SMX Plus is a fantastic road boot too.
Comfort
Not all sports boots are comfortable quite a lot aren't, but the SMX Plus is ultra-comfortable. The upper is lightweight and durable Microfibre. It is anatomically optimised with asymmetric leather accordion zones and a strategically positioned front vent for maximum flexibility and riding comfort. The contoured synthetic compound sole features aqua-dynamic channels to promote a more significant water run-off. A fully-adjustable speed lacing closure, elastic-mounted lateral zip and ratchet buckle closure on the calf ensure a precise and secure fit. The Alpinestars anatomical footbed provides arch support and improved forefoot feeling. Medial-side contouring of the boots promotes more excellent contact with the body of the bike for a comfier and more excellent ride. The lightweight construction means these aren't heavy or bulky but still provide a considerable amount of safety.
Practicality
The toe sliders are fully replaceable, but the truly practical feature of the SMX Plus boots is the adjustability. The inner and outer are fully adjustable for the perfect fit. The Microfibre is not only comfortable and lightweight but also incredibly easy to clean. The sole is anti-slip and gives an excellent grip. Reflective details have been incorporated into the design but maximise night visibility. The zip positioning is another convenient feature - it makes these so much easier to put on and take off while wearing leathers - Alpinestars' really did hit it out of the park when they designed these.
Negatives
We are really scraping the barrel with this negative, but the fastening system on this version isn't as slick and smooth as the version after - but this is still absolutely fine; it still works perfectly and is fully secure.
Verdict
Adrian from our Oakmere store has worked here for over twenty-five years (there are rumours it's closer to forty years) and swears by these boots. He has seen all styles and brands, and these are the boots he owns and uses. He won't hear a bad word about them - but if I am honest, we struggled to come up with negatives for this blog! Enough said.
Until next time, stay safe,
Alex
