Melbourne 3.0 is the third evolution of the Oxford Products Melbourne jacket - with improvements each time! It is made from a highly durable 600D Polyester shell with nylon bonded Coates thread throughout for superior impact resistance. CE level 1 armour at the shoulders and elbows provide added protection. It also offers a pocket for a back protector for additional protection.

Styling

If you're looking for a jacket suitable for all seasons and all styles then this is the jacket for you. The short styling gives a sportier feel and the aesthetic is subtle. The design on the jacket gives off sporty vibes - which was definitely the intention by Oxford Products. Reflective detailing is integrated into the design so these reflective details actually enhance the design of this jacket as well as the safety! Three colourways are available - plain black, fluo yellow and black and white. All three have the classic black as their base with stylish hints of colour. A fantastic looking jacket that can be used for touring, sports riding and other styles too.

Practicality

This is suitable for all seasons. It features a removable thermal liner, lock open ventilation system and waterproof and breathable membrane. The fit is adjustable for the perfect fit and the intelligent cuffs mean very simple but effective adjustability. Handwarmer pockets are a nice touch - especially in colder weather! The airflow system can be locked or opened depending on your preference. It is designed in such a way that it does not allow water into the jacket. The Melbourne 3.0 also zips to Oxford Products jeans which prevents wind ingress for superior comfort.

Comfort

On the subject of comfort, the thermal liner is made from ultra-soft fabric for a comfortable feel. Even with this removed the jacket is still comfortable. It also features Amara collar and cuffs for added comfort. These are next to the skin and the Amara material is ultra-soft and is designed to combat irritation. The handwarmer pockets of the Melbourne 3.0 are a lifesaver in cold weather just like the waterproof membrane is in showers! Another fantastic feature is the lock open ventilation system. It gives supreme comfort in warmer weathers with superior air circulation for a lovely riding experience! The rear of the jacket is longer to prevent wind ingress. It also gives a more comfortable fit in the riding position - no riding up or uncomfortable gaping!

Negatives

The only real negative about this jacket is a positive for some. The length. Shorter style jackets are not as popular as longer styled touring jackets. Shorter jackets are seen as less comfortable for touring and have a reputation for leaving a bit of a gape at the back. Oxford has worked hard to prevent this with the longer rear on the Melbourne 3.0. (A true benefit of being the third model of a very popular jacket) Regardless of any improvements Oxford make, there will be many bikers who will not even consider this jacket purely on the basis of its length.

Verdict

The shorter styling of the Melbourne jacket isn't for everyone. Longer touring style jackets tend to be more popular. Oxford Products have worked on making this not only sporty but comfortable. The Amara fabric on the cuffs and collar feels great. The longer rear works well in the riding position on any type of bike - even sports bikes! For a stylish, waterproof, great looking jacket that works for all-seasons you could do a lot worse than the Melbourne 3.0!
