Safety
Yes, this is a budget jacket, even more budget with the new price, but this is still a safety item. The Spartan J17, in both the longer and short option, is made from a highly durable fabric. Removable CE approved armour at the elbows and shoulders provide impact resistance. A back protector pocket means you can upgrade to CE approved armour should you wish. Reflective piping gives added night visibility.

Styling
One great advantage of the Spartan J17 being available in a longer and a shorter length is you've got more choice! The shorter J17S has a more sporty styling whereas the longer version is geared towards touring in its aesthetics. In the hi-viz versions of the J17, the contrasting yellow design is in different places - these aren't just the same jackets but longer.
Spartan have thought about a sporty and touring design to match each jacket. Matching Spartan trousers are also available. Although there are only two colours available in each length, again, these are both well thought out. Black for the fan of the more muted, classic style and black and hi-viz yellow for the biker concerned with visibility.

Comfort
Despite their obvious differences in looks, the Spartan J17 jackets share the same attributes when it comes to comfort. A removable quilted lining keeps you warm in colder weather but is easily removed in warmer temperatures. An adjustable Velcro waist and arms provide a personalised fit (and ensure the armour stays in the correct place). Storm covers over the main zip prevent water and wind ingress too.

Practicality
As this is a budget jacket you'd be forgiven for thinking there won't be many practical features - but you'd be wrong! A waterproof membrane keeps you dry while the removable thermal liner makes this ideal for all seasons. You also can't get more practical than two versions of the same jacket - a shorter sporty one and a longer touring one.
The personalised fit provided by the adjustability at the waist and arms means this will fit all forms. The storm cover over the zip prevents water and wind ingress plus the cuffs and collar benefit from adjusters to fit all. A short connection zip attaches to Spartan trousers and the CE approved armour is removable allowing the jacket to be washed. Two pockets also provide handy storage. The hi-viz yellow version of the jacket is also the definition of practical - be safe, be seen!

Negatives
Obviously, the price of the Spartan J17 means it doesn't offer the highest standard of protection. The waterproof membrane is not Gore-Tex, so is not fully breathable. There is no CE approved back protector. The adjustability is great for a budget jacket, but not comprehensive like an expensive jacket will offer. The fabric construction isn't the most luxurious against your skin but it is tough and durable for the purpose intended. There are only two colour options available which, if you have a particular palette preference and these don't suit, you're scuppered.

Verdict
All in all, the Spartan J17 jacket, in both its longer and short version, is a fantastic jacket for the price. The RRP of £69.99 is a great price for this jacket - so with the J&S reduced price, you're getting a real bargain!
