J&S Supported Rider results - Round 9 Oulton Park
Hi everyone, and welcome back to my round-up of the latest British Superbike action. This weekend saw the first round of the 'Showdown', which came from Oulton Park. Only nine races left to see who comes out on top and takes the British Superbike title. Let's start with the support classes. First, up Junior Supersport, Zak Shelton qualified in 4th place for the only race of the weekend as the first of the two races was cancelled. Teammate Christopher Johnson was back in 11th place.
Christopher had a great result in the race and came home in 9th place; teammate Zak had a DNF, and no way the young rider wanted to end his weekend.
Junior Superstock and a solid qualifying for Caolan Irwin, who set a time fast enough for 2nd on the grid for the first race, Louis Valleley would start from 14th.
The first race saw Caolan drop down to 5th at the end of the race. Meanwhile, Louis made it up to 8th place.
Race two and another top 10 finish for Louis, who came home in 10th while Caolan had a DNF.
Superstock 1000, and things were getting tight at the top of the championship. Qualifying was mixed and was down to who could make the best of the conditions. Fraser Rogers was down in 17th with Lewis Rollo in front in 12th place, Aussie Billy McConnell would start from the front of the second row in 4th place. Meanwhile, Luke Mossey put his Kawasaki on a pole to start from the front of the grid for the weekend's first race.
The first race of the weekend saw all the J&S supported riders finish in the top 10. Lewis made up five places to come home in 7th, Fraser Rogers came home in 5th place, Billy had an incident-packed race after almost being taken out by another rider and then being forced wide and nearly having a high-side he dropped down to 15th by the end of the first lap. However, he charged back through the field to finish in 4th place. Meanwhile, Luke Mossey was away at the front of the pack and in 2nd place for the race's early stages, stalking early race leading Chrissy Rouse. Luke made a move to take the lead and stayed there until the end. It was an excellent win for Luke and a great way to start his weekend.
The weekend's second race saw much of the same for the J&S backed riders, all finishing well in the top 10. Lewis Rollo finished in 8th place after starting from 11th place on the grid. Billy McConnell finished in 5th place to consolidate his top 3 positions in the championship standings. Meanwhile, Fraser Rogers stood on the podium in 3rd place, and Luke Mossey took another trip to the top 3 and got to taste some more of the fizzy stuff with a 2nd place finish and a great points scoring weekend to put himself back in the championship hunt.
Supersport and GP2 Dan Jones put his GP2 bike 6th on the grid for the weekend's first race, with Rhys Irwin behind in 8th place on his Yamaha R6, with Ben Currie and his Gearlink Kawasaki in 10th place.
The first race saw Rhys finish 7th in the Supersport class. Dan Jones took another podium in the GP2 class with a solid 2nd place. Ben Currie had a race-long battle at the front after making his way back from 10th, and he eventually finished in 2nd place to keep his championship hopes alive.
Race two and another podium for Dan Jones, who finished in 2nd place. That makes four podiums in the last four races for the GP2 rider. Rhys had a DNF, while Ben Currie ended up in 4th place overall after being handed a 3 second time penalty after an incident with a safety car. Ben is now 13 points behind championship leader Jack Kennedy.
So on to the Superbike class and the first of the final nine races to decide the 2021 British Superbike Champion. Gino Rea carried on his excellent form with a solid 8th place in qualifying, Glenn Irwin, who is in the championship showdown, was just behind in 9th place.
Race 1 and Gino had a fright on the first lap of the race after Ryan Vickers was sent skywards from his Kawasaki right in front of him and did well to take avoiding action. Unfortunately, Gino suffered a DNF in the first race of the weekend after crashing out in the early stages. Glenn had a solid race and finished in 8th place.
The second race saw Glenn have a hectic start as he had to start from the very back of the grid for the second race. Unfortunately, in the race, Glenn had a DNF after crashing out. At the same time, Gino was just in the top 10 with a 10th place finish after being in the leading group of riders for the early part of the race.
The third and final race saw Glenn start from 2nd place on the grid and a solid race from the Irishman, but he slipped down to 7th by the end. Gino ended the weekend with a 9th place finish and more points to add to his championship total.
So that's all for this weekend and the first round of the showdown done and dusted. No rest for the wicked, and the championship rolls into Donington Park next weekend 1st-3rd of October, but this time on the longer GP circuit.
So until then, thanks for reading.
