Hi everyone and welcome to my round-up of this weekends action. This weekend the racing came from Silverstone but on the much shorter National layout. Only 6 corners, 2 left and 4 right, and a lap time of around 54 seconds!!
Unfortunately, Sullivan Mounsey wasn't racing in the Honda Talent Cup this weekend due to an injured thumb sustained in training. Get well soon, Sullivan.
Racing in Junior Supersport this weekend was Zak Shelton and Osian Jones. In qualifying Zak Qualified down in 21st place and Osian Jones on the outside of the second row in 6th. In the first of two races this weekend, it was a double podium for the J&S supported riders. With Zak Shelton finishing on the bottom step of the podium but only 0.6 seconds from the race win. But in the first place was Osian!! The young man took the race win to take the top step and claim the race win. A great result for Zak who made it all the way up from 21st place on the grid.
The second race of the weekend saw Zak start from 3rdand Osian in 2nd place. The two riders were always close togetherthroughout the race and crossed the line together too. With Zak this timegetting the better of Osian, Zak came home in 4th place with Osianjust behind in 5th. The second race saw the top 9 riders covered by1 second. A great weekend for both riders and plenty of points for thechampionship total.
In Superstock 600 Taylor Moreton made a welcome return afterbreaking his collar bone last time out. One name missing was Louis Valleley whowas busy testing a new bike at Donington Park. In qualifying it was the 2 Irwinboys who led the way with Rhys leading the way to take pole position withbrother Caolan behind in 3rd place on the grid but only 0.3 of asecond behind. Taylor was down in 27th place but again still racingwith that damaged collar bone. In the race Caolan suffered a DNF after a crashin the opening laps, Taylor made a great start and was up to 17th bythe end of the first lap, then the safety car made an appearance and bunchedthe whole field up again, Taylor crossed the line to finish in 14thplace and score a couple of championship points. But it was another Irwin whomade it on to the podium with Rhys taking the race win to add to his 3rdplace last time out in the previous round. So a commanding weekend for Rhys,pole position and a race win!!
Superstock 1000 saw Billy McConnell and Lewis Rollo in action this weekend. Superfast times all weekend from the stock 1000 class with an action-packed qualifying session. The top 16 riders were covered by 1 second. Lewis Rollo started the first race of the weekend from 14th on the grid and Billy McConnell would start from 6th, but a small crash for Billy towards the end of the session left his OMG Racing team up against it to get his bike ready for the first race. Billy missed the time for the pit lane-closing before the start of the race which meant he would have to start right at the very back of the grid in 36th place!!
In the race, Billy had to make progress and make it fast if he wanted to secure any championship points. He battled his way through the field to finish in 9th place!! A great result for the BMW rider. Lewis also made progress during the race and fought his way up to 5th place. A red flag came out and the race result was declared. The second race saw both riders start much higher up the grid. Billy in 9th and Lewis in 2nd on the front row. The start of the race saw Lewis take the lead and try and gap the chasing pack, but in doing so he used a lot of his rear tyre and this would result in a lack of grip towards the end of the race. Lewis crossed the line in 6th place after dropping back, Billy came home in 4th place and secured another top 10 finish.
The Supersport 600 and GP2 class saw Ben Currie and Dan Jones racing this weekend. Dan qualified in 18th place overall and was the 5th fastest GP2 rider, Ben Currie would start the shorter sprint race in 8th place. The first race saw Ben have a race-long tussle with his teammate and crossed the line in 6th place overall. Dan came home in 12th overall and was the 5th bike in the GP2 class. In the longer feature race, Ben Currie would start from the outside of the front row in 3rd place with Dan starting in 14th. Ben made a great start and sat in 2nd place and in the leading group. The safety car came out after a number of riders fell. Dan Jones suffered a bike issue and registered a DNF. Once the safety car had brought the whole field back together Ben would cross the line to finish in 5th place. 2 top 10 finishes for Ben this weekend which is great news for the Aussie rider and hopefully his luck has started to change.
Again 3 races for the Superbike class this weekend, qualifying saw a huge high side crash for Graeme Irwin and knocked the wind out of him for sure, he would start the first race from 21st on the grid, just in front of Josh Owens in 22nd. Joe Francis once again building confidence all the time qualified in 15th place, Hector Barbera won the battle of the OMG riders and just pipped teammate Luke Mossey, Hector would start 9th with Luke in 10th. Championship leader Glenn Irwin would start from the middle of the second row in 5th place. 18 riders were covered by 1 second but the qualifying session was cut short due to oil being leaked on to the track which saw many riders fall in the closing stages, both Josh Owens and Hector Barbera were both caught up in this.
The first race saw Josh Owens retire in the early stages with bike problems and also Joe Francis would retire towards the end of the race too. Graeme Irwin did a fantastic job after his big qualifying crash to come home in 19th place. Luke would get the better of his teammate Hector and finish in 11th with Hector behind in 13th. Glenn made a great start and was up to 2nd place behind his brother Andy and was in the lead of the race by the end of lap 5. Tyre issues forced Glenn to consolidate his place in the championship and would finish in 4th position.
The second race saw Luke Mossey retire with bike problems, also with a DNF next to his name was Josh Owens. Graeme made improvements to finish in 18th place, another points-scoring race for Joe Francis who came home in 14th place, Hector Barbera rounded out the top 10 in 10th place. Glenn once again had a solid result, he came back from 10th place on the opening laps after being forced wide, he gradually came back through the pack and came home in 4th place after breaking the chasing riders to add more points to his total.
The third and final race of the weekend saw a front row start for Glenn, he would start the final race from 2nd place on the grid. Luke would start from 10th, Hector in 13th, Joe from 18th with Josh starting from 21st and Graeme behind in 22nd. All the J&S backed riders would finish the final race of the weekend with Graeme Irwin holding his starting place to finish in 22nd, Josh Owens improved from his starting place to come home in 20th place. Joe Francis just missed out on the final points-scoring place after crossing the line in 16th place. Hector improved by 1 place to come home in 12th, teammate Luke Mossey was in the top 10 to finish in 10th. Once again another 4th place finish for Glenn Irwin means another 13 points to his total. Glenn would hold a solid position in the top 5 and leading group for the whole race.
Glenn leads the championship at the halfway point with 157 points and a 35 point lead over Josh Brookes.
So that's halfway point in this shortened season 9 races down and 9 to go. Next round comes from Oulton Park on the 18th - 20th September. This round is the local round for J&S Accessories. as our flagship store is only a short distance away from the track. Consistency will be key for the remainder of the championship. With only 9 races left nobody will want to drop points or make a mistake.
